Language and Communication Skills

  • Verbal behavior is a necessary milestone in human development that aids a child in successfully navigating and adapting to their environment.

  • Verbal behavior can take the form of vocal speech, gestures, written text, or communicating through an AAC device.

  • Being unable to communicate one's wants and needs can lead to great distress and challenging behavior.

Our interventions heavily emphasize functional communication training (FCT), so that your child can have less stressful and more appropriate ways to access things they may want or need.

Play and Social Skills

  • Early in a child's development, much of their learning occurs through play.

  • Children with an autism diagnosis often have a more difficult time developing play skills which would aid them in developing their motor strength and planning.

  • Play also facilitates developing the social skills necessary to  build and maintain relationships, and adapt to new environments.

Our interventions emphasize the development of play skills to facilitate growth in motor planning and social skills. The assessments we use also take into account this important skill.

Daily Living Skills

  • Daily living skills such as hand washing, toothbrushing, and toileting can be difficult for children on autism spectrum.

  • Difficulty with these skills can make everyday life more challenging for both you and your child, as routines take longer and require more attention.

  • Structured teaching of these skills can reduce stress and time spent on these activities throughout the day.

We can develop interventions to address daily functioning according to developmental appropriateness.

Reducing Challenging Behaviors

  • Repetitive behaviors and melt-downs are common among children on the spectrum

  • These behaviors can make home life difficult and prevent habilitation.

  • Parents are often unaware of how they may be reinforcing these behaviors, and often do so to achieve short-term relief.

By identifying these behaviors and designing appropriate interventions, challenging behaviors can be reduced and learning can begin.
